ECG invests GH¢4.2m to fix low voltage in Enchi, Mpohor

ECG is rolling out targeted interventions worth more than GH¢4.2m to address persistent low voltage and power reliability challenges in Enchi...

Acting Managing Director Ing. Kwame Kpekpena said the projects are designed to improve power quality and stabilise supply in the affected communities, as part of a wider effort to strengthen the national distribution network.

At Enchi, ECG has awarded a GH¢2,040,853.43 contract to Messrs Possible Power Limited to reinstate a 10-kilometre 33kV link between Enchi and Dadieso, which will be supplied from the new Juaboso Bulk Supply Point.

When completed, the feeder from Juaboso BSP to Enchi will be about 89 kilometres long, a major improvement over the current setup, where Enchi is fed by a 33kV line from Esiama stretching roughly 147 kilometres.

ECG said an alternative feeder from Bogoso, at about 122 kilometres, has also been unsuitable because of low voltage caused by overloading on a Ghana Grid Company transformer there.

The Enchi works include the installation of 29 treated poles, the stringing of more than 21 kilometres of conductor, the installation of a 33kV GIS load isolator, and vegetation clearing across 7.3 kilometres of dense forest.

ECG said all materials have already been delivered to site, but the work is awaiting final approval from the Forestry Commission before construction can continue within the forest reserve.

In the meantime, stakeholder engagements are ongoing and interim vegetation control measures are being carried out to give consumers some relief.

In Mpohor, ECG said the electricity challenges are linked largely to an incomplete network upgrade project that started in 2016.

The upgrade of Feeder C07 from 11kV to 33kV is about 70 percent complete, with visible improvements already recorded in the sections that have been upgraded.

ECG said the remaining 30 percent, mainly transformer upgrades, is essential to fully optimise the network.

To address this, the company is investing GH¢2,163,192.15 to procure 18 additional 33kV distribution transformers and four metering cubicles as a medium-term measure, while a long-term plan will see the construction of about four kilometres of an alternative 33kV line to shorten the feeder and improve fault management.

The combined value of the Enchi and Mpohor interventions is GH¢4,204,045.58. ECG says the projects form part of its broader GH¢3.46 billion phased programme announced in Accra to tackle low-voltage pockets, replace overloaded and damaged equipment, and improve reliability across the country.

The utility said it is also carrying out risk assessments and public education in Mpohor, where illegal mining activities are posing additional threats to power infrastructure.
